Wynn (and Trump) Watch - December 2002

31 December 2002

Steve Wynn has a lot to do theses days.  The money has been raised, the ground broken and the plans nearly completed for his Las Vegas dream: LeReve.  In Macau, he has a casino to build, staff and get in operation before his dream is complete.  That does not seem to be enough for the energetic, charismatic Wynn.  In the last thirty days, he has been touring Maryland and Mexico looking for places, partners and permission to operate.

Casino Developer Studies Opportunities.  Las Vegas and Chinese gambling-hotel developer Steve Wynn has lined up a partner in Mexico in anticipation that casinos will be legalized in that nation, the Wall Street Journal reported today.  Las Vegas Sun, 12-6-02

Wynn Considers Resort For Maryland.  New details surfaced Thursday about talks between Las Vegas and Chinese casino resort developer Steve Wynn and top Maryland lawmakers to explore proposals for legalizing slots in Maryland.  …"His focus is to build a major entertainment complex with racing, slots and entertainment," said Rawlings, a Baltimore Democrat who serves as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.  Las Vegas Sun, 11-29-02

Wynn Planning School In China To Lure Workers  Steve Wynn will establish a hospitality school in Macau as part of his effort to recruit and educate workers in the Chinese city.  …Wynn's casino project in Macau will be developed in two phases with the groundbreaking of Phase I expected in April…is expected to open in the second quarter of 2004.  Richard N. Velotta, Las Vegas Sun, 12-23-02

And on the other side of town, the not-so charismatic Donald, is still trying to refinance; Wall Street is not so easily charmed by Trump as by Wynn.  Still, The Donald has had time to make a run at the last license in the Chicago area and add a little Riviera stock to his portfolio.  He may be a step behind Steve in charm but not in energy to pursue his own casino dream.  Trump may not wish to influence the Riviera, but he is sitting just two blocks away, waiting for Steve to open his dream.  A meeting of the dreams?  A duel in the desert?

Trump Planning $470 Million Debt Sale In Jan.  Casino and real estate mogul Donald Trump will make a second attempt at selling $470 million in bonds in January, after shelving the sale last May, as he tries to raise money to refinance debt coming due next year.  Dena Aubin, Yahoo Business, Reuters, 12-27-02

Four More Towns Hope To Bring Casino To Area.  Four towns have joined the effort to bring a Donald Trump-operated casino to Crestwood.  Markham, Midlothian, Ford Heights and Phoenix (Illinois) have signed on with seven other communities, Blue Island Mayor Donald Peloquin said after the group met Wednesday night.  Brent Watters, Daily Southtown, 12-19-02

Trump boosts his stake in Riviera ownership to 10%.  Donald Trump increased his personal stake in a Las Vegas Strip casino company to 10 percent, he disclosed Friday. …Trump said Friday that he has no plans to buy the company or exert influence over it.  … Riviera Holdings owns the 2,100-room Riviera casino hotel in Las Vegas and the Riviera Black Hawk Casino in Black Hawk, Colo.  The Las Vegas Riviera is located two blocks from Steve Wynn's Le Reve…  Joe Weinert, The Press of Atlantic City, 12-28-02
